SATURDAY PUZZLE — On first glance, I feared that I was going to just be the designated looker-upper of names and places today; there seemed to be a lot of that kind of clue. But by knowing a scant few facts, and by starting at the bottom, I made my merry way through another sprightly weekend Robyn Weintraub puzzle and wound up with a finished grid and a distinctly brighter outlook on the day. Ms. Weintraub is one of those constructors who has that gift of providing edification with minimal mortification, at least as far as my brain is concerned.

If you knew any entry longer than five letters off the bat, I tip my hat to you, smarty pants. Maybe OVERSIZED or STICK SHIFT was gettable with no crosses, but I had only GADOT, CROC and TEA. Looking back, this puzzle was quite fair — there was deducible fill in every sector, like SOSO, ONCE, STONES, TOMB and HALLE. (Those last two took a modicum of cultural knowledge.) But none of the more substantial stuff came easily to me.

As far as misdirections, my personal notes included “recap” for SUM UP and that one little “N” instead of “E” that I’m sure others stumbled on — it was down a STEEP slope.

As always with Ms. Weintraub’s constructions, there was a generous splash of wit in the fill — clues for PEA, LAST PLACE, SCARECROWS, LISP and, my favorite, I think, SEALY. (Trust me, even if you have to click that link, it’s comedy gold.)

1A: It’s probably within our realm to get that the cool kids at the poker table toss out slangy terms like TRIPS for things like three-of-a-kind — shorthand for triples, sure. This being a Saturday, there’s a little more to learn, namely that TRIPS is actually a rare variant, in Texas Hold ’em, where the public-facing cards hold two of your three-of-a-kind and you have one. If you’ve got two-thirds in your own hand, which apparently is much more common, you’ve got a “set.”

16A: A touch of mordant wit, like a few grains of sea salt on the top of a cookie — to take a “Grave matter” into your own hands, you’re going to have to hold a BONE.

22A: Funny, but we just had “string art” last week, which sparked a nano-thought in my head on this very topic that was long gone by the time this puzzle rolled round. Sheldon Cooper is a specialist in STRING THEORY, and I don’t know enough about this monumentally popular show to know what import that has on the plot.

48A: This very mystifying clue goes with a debut entry today that harkens back to the Daisy Oracle, which is supposedly an old French form of divination. (You might think of Faust — for me it harkens back to the Brady Bunch, but that might be a false memory.) This is the classic technique of plucking petals from a daisy, usually chanting, “he loves me, HE LOVES ME NOT” as you go (or flipping the gender, of course).

2D: It’s a little late in the season for the reference below, strictly speaking, but something about ROTO — short for “rotogravure” — conjures up an Irving Berlin lyric.

8D: I can’t be the only one who learned in school that giraffes were the only silent mammals. I think it was back when fewer people thought to record other living things in frequencies that didn’t fall in our own auditory range. The same perceptive biologist who decoded humpback whale songs in the 1960s, Katy Payne, made news a few years ago with detailed recordings of the rumbles of forest elephants. It turns out that giraffes have a similar system of communication.

Oh, also, Ms. Weintraub is making a bit of a giraffe joke, as one pronounces “giraffe” with a SOFT G.

12D: CONTOUR MAP was a debut entry next door, but this clue, “Ataraxia,” hasn’t been seen in the grid before and as a concept it’s due for a comeback. Ataraxia is from the ancient Greek, a “state of consciousness characterized by freedom from mental agitation,” or INNER PEACE. It often seems like modern humanity is actively striving for the exact opposite, so I was happy to learn this term.

27D: As far as recognizing “Some swingers” as a pun clue, I thought I was clever enough to think of “orangutans” going here (not confident enough to write it in, but perhaps others did). Instead we’ve got some athletes along the same line, AERIALISTS.

This puzzle went through not one, but two rounds of revisions. The first time I needed to get rid of a bunch of unimpressive fill in the SE corner, which included ESAI, SHIA, ENLAI and other junk — but which held together, amongst other things, the totally adorable entry I LOVE TRASH, a favorite tune of mine by Oscar the Grouch. Sorry Oscar …

The second revision was requested because my solution to fixing the unimpressive fill in the SE corner unfortunately yielded a series of unimpressive longer entries. It was hardly my best work, and I completely understand why Will sent the grid back again (and thankful that he gave me the opportunity to revisit it one more time).

Ultimately I had to pull out about half the grid and experiment with endless variations of cheater squares to get something that scored both high on my “that’s cute” meter and low on the “dreck” meter. Fortunately, it finally came together and I’m pleased with the puzzle you’re seeing here today. I hope you like it too. Happy solving!
